    Shizno S,

I know exactly how your mom feels from the perspective of a patient, having had 14 surgeries on my spine, and also having a doctorate in physical anthropology with a focus on the age-progressive phenomena that affect the spine and hips.

I have written about the subject you are asking about and would be happy to have you review any of the articles at EzineArtilces dot com. I will leave the exact link to my work below!

First, use ice not heat! Ice will reduce the inflammation and allow your mom some fairly quick pain relief! I talk about ice versus heat in one of the articles! Also, have her lie on her side with pillows between her legs at the knees. Put one or two under her head so her spine, neck to sacrum (tailbone) is one straight line! That will relieve pressure. I would suggest an ice-compression brace and you can get one on my blog but a bag of ice will work just fine until you can get one…if you can afford it. They are worth the investment, I used mine for YEARS! If not, just use an ice bag, wrap it around her waist with a towel or sheet, and the keep it there for 30 minutes, then off for a few minutes, then back on as needed. Have your mom wear a t-shirt or something else light so the ice isn’t in direct contact with the skin, so you avoid frostbite and uncomfortable pain due to the cold. There may be some discomfort as a result of the cold but compared to the relief she will get with the ice, it’s a small price to pay!

Sciatica is a symptom of some sort of an underlying condition. It can range from a simple muscle imbalance to a ruptured disc and nerve impingement. Without an MRI it is impossible to tell. If the pain is that bad, I would suggest an immediate visit to the doctor’s office! I wouldn’t go to an ER if you can avoid it, you will wait forever and the pain of waiting will be worst than anything they will do for her, right away anyway. Some urgent care centers are good, particularly if you call ahead and tell them you are bringing your mom in an that she cannot sit in a waiting room for a long time because she is in so much pain.

You don’t say how old your mom is, what precipitated the event, if she has had this problem long-term, and if she is overweight or not. All of these factors come into play.

I wish I could help more, I know what she is going through and can quite literally “feel her pain.” Let me know if I can be of further assistance! excellencepaidforward (at) gmail dot com is my personal email if you need anything else answered!
