No, but you could truly feel like you are choking. I come to feel like I cannot breathe well often.

depression is definitely an emotional sickness but if manifests itself in with physical ailments
lack of sleep, oversleep, over/under eating, isolation, alcholism, lack of motivation, lack of concentration and suicide—pretty serious stuff!

Clinical depression is a mental sickness when a person loses the ability to live a normal life, due to interference with feelings of sadness, fatigue, stress, or thoughts of suicide.

A person can become depressed in a variety of ways. For example, common “growing pains”, the path of adolescence causes chemical changes in the brain. These chemical changes can be sudden, and cause depression in teens. In more sever cases however, there may be permanent chemical imbalances that can cause depression in adults that if left unchecked, can lead to other mental disorders.

In addition, the environment that a person lives in can set off depression. For example, if a person lives in a setting where he/she is uncomfortable due to violence, pressure, abuse, drugs, etc, the chances of that person becoming depressed is much higher.

Anyone can be depressed. However, most depression cases arise after the age of 14, all the way until adulthood, and even after. In fact, there is a high case of people over 70 committing suicide due to depression, moreso than adolescents.

When your friend says that depression is like being “choked to death”, it is more of a metaphor. Depression cannot physically choke you do death. What it means is that you are being mentally choked to death.

In the mind of a depressed person, there is a very uncomfortable situation. May it be abuse, violence, pressure, drugs, or just natural depression, a depressed person finds that there is no solution to their problems. Also, many depression victims do not get any attention to them, or their problems from other people. Many victims of depression think that they are fighting on their own, without aid. When the situation gets desperate, suicide becomes the only answer to a depression victim.

When your friend says that depression is like being choked to death, it means more of something like this: there are no solutions, so there is less hope. When there is less hope, it is like being choked to death, no help, and no solution.

I hope this helps. If your friend is still depressed, please recommend that he/she needs to talk to a councilor, and tell her/him that you care about the issue. This will help alleviate the symptoms of depression.

It is both. When you’re depressed you feel like your mind is restless and your body is worn out.

It’s classified as a mood disorder, but it has physical and emotional aspects.
